David Crossman is Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of St Andrews and an honorary consultant cardiologist at NHS Fife. Between 2017 and 2022 he served as Chief Scientist Health for the Scottish Government. He qualified in 1982 from St Bartholomew’s Hospital and undertook most of his postgraduate training at the Hammersmith Hospital. He was appointed Professor of Clinical Cardiology at the University of Sheffield in 1994 and was an interventional cardiologist in that post. His main interest is in coronary artery disease and the inflammatory basis of the atherosclerotic mechanism that is the basis of this condition. He is interested in the mechanisms of disease and how these can be explored through intervention with pharmaceuticals. His research underpinned the case for IL-1 as a cytokine that is important in myocardial infarction. He is passionate about clinical medicine and the importance of research in man to improve outcomes through improving understanding of disease mechanisms.
